Member Spotlight: Milvia Fisher, VP of Social Media and Engagement

By: Ashley N. Rosa

The leadership team of the University of Tampa chapter of AMA is composed of industrious, dedicated, and engaged college students. Being a part of a well-known organization requires an array of soft and hard skills. In this member spotlight segment, I had the opportunity to get an insight into a day in the life of Milvia Fisher -Vice president of the Social Media and Engagement team on AMA Leadership Team.

Getting to Know Milvia

Milvia Fisher is a marketing major with a double minor in public relations and sports management. She began her journey with AMA as a subject matter expert and worked her way to Vice President of Social Media and Engagement, the largest team in the organization. Milvia excels in various areas including academic excellence, on-campus extracurriculars, and in leading the social media growth of the University of Tampa American Marketing Association.

Milvia is a full-time student, works as a sales intern at BlueGrace Logistics, is involved in the Institute for Sales Excellence on campus, and on the weekends works as a server at Olive Garden. She is a gal on the go. When asked how she manages to execute all these achievements she stated:

“the only way that I am able to get everything done is that I have an amazing support system. In AMA, I am extremely lucky to work with a group of very proactive and hardworking people that I literally would not be able to do everything that the communications team does without…All in all, I am a very hard-working individual and I am very lucky to know the people I do and have a very supportive family”.

Milvia shines a light on the importance of support not only within your family but also within your “work family”. Having adequate support is paramount to the success of a person.

The Influence of AMA

Professor Gary Beemer, the advisor of AMA at UT, piqued Milvia’s interest in joining the organization. Milvia was in his marketing class and as a marketing student, she wanted to be able to subsidize what she was learning in class. Through her involvement in AMA she has been able to apply what she learns in class and further develop her skills. AMA has prepared her for her intern role by developing her soft skills, teaching her persistence, professionalism, and how to balance and organize her day to meet deadlines. Professor Beemer thinks highly of Milvia’s progress and work ethic. When asked to share his thoughts on her growth he stated:

“I have seen Milvia grow from one of my students to leading a critical team as an AMA UT VP. Her growth in skills, experience and maturity have been exceptional and I have seen her transform from college student to a young business professional.”

AMA Leisure and Inspirational Moments

In a glimpse, the most valuable lesson she obtained through this marketing organization has been learning how to be a leader while balancing friendships when having to be a leader in tough situations. Her most valued memories in AMA has been going windsurfing as part of the AMA agency and volunteering for ‘Bark in the Park’, an event AMA volunteered at.

Milvia once received advice from a friend that changed her perspective, “don’t push so hard to get to the next level that you don’t get to enjoy the phase of your life you’re in”. To Milvia this has meant to keep looking forward without losing sight of the moment you are in. Milvia continues to explain “No matter what you are doing, working in a corporate office or serving at a local restaurant, there are lessons there that you can take into any career or job. Also, you’re only in college once, you are only in your 20’s once, so make mistakes and really live life to the fullest now”. Along with this advice she wishes for incoming freshmen or anyone who feels they are not doing enough to “keep pushing and do the things that make you happy. It’s the only way you will find what you want to do and who you want to be”.

At the age of twenty-one, Milvia Fisher proves she is a force to be reckoned with and extremely insightful beyond her years. She is a motivational and inspirational young woman. During this interview, she has given us a glimpse into the life of a dedicated and multi-tasking student, her journey with AMA and all of its opportunities, and provided us with inspirational advice.
